What can a textbook for children who are just learning to read look like? The German textbook »Jana und Dino« is aimed at pre-school children and first-time readers. Within the two volumes, children are guided from listening and speaking to reading and writing for the first time. The protagonists, the girl Jana and the dinosaur Dino, playfully and cheerfully accompany the children as they learn. Together they touch on age-appropriate topics such as »food & drink« and »family«. They immerse themselves in the world of colors and numbers. Dino accompanies Jana to school and they practice reading and writing together. Small picture puzzles, song lyrics, playful features such as craft templates and game ideas for the classroom provide variety. The visually appealing design concept stands out with a large comic section and lots of illustrations. Each chapter starts with an introductory comic, which can also be played as a video. A clear color concept and pictograms navigate through the chapters and lessons and facilitate intuitive orientation even without reading skills. Game ideas for lessons – illustrated with classroom scenes – are deliberately differentiated from the other tasks by color, making them recognizable to teachers at a glance. When choosing the font, care was taken to ensure very high legibility. In addition, pictograms clarify the instructions in the workbook.
